Review: Amsterdam (2022) – A Star-Studded Mystery That Struggles to Find Its Rhythm

Directed by David O. Russell, Amsterdam (2022) is an ambitious, stylish blend of historical fiction, dark comedy, and political intrigue. Set between World War I and the early 1930s, the film follows three close friends—Burt Berendsen (Christian Bale), Valerie Voze (Margot Robbie), and Harold Woodman (John David Washington)—who become entangled in a bizarre murder mystery that uncovers a real-life political conspiracy.

With a dazzling ensemble cast that includes Robert De Niro, Rami Malek, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Taylor Swift, the film certainly doesn’t lack star power. Christian Bale stands out with a quirky, heartfelt performance, bringing both humor and depth to his war-scarred doctor. Robbie and Washington also shine in moments, though their characters often feel underwritten compared to the sprawling plot around them.

Visually, Amsterdam is gorgeous—filled with elegant costume design, period-accurate settings, and rich cinematography. However, the film’s real issue lies in its uneven tone and overly complicated narrative. It juggles far too many characters and themes—friendship, fascism, trauma, loyalty—without giving them the clarity or impact they deserve. The pacing lags, and the central mystery, though inspired by real events, loses urgency under the weight of exposition and quirky side plots.

Despite its flaws, the film has its moments of charm and cleverness, especially when it leans into the bond between its three leads. There’s a noble intention here: to warn against the rise of authoritarianism and celebrate unlikely heroes of history. But the message gets muddled in a chaotic execution.

Amsterdam is a bold swing that doesn’t fully connect, but fans of ensemble dramas and period pieces may still find elements to admire.
