Review: My Mom’s A Werewolf (1989)
Genre: Horror / Comedy / Family

My Mom’s A Werewolf is a quirky and often ridiculous 1980s horror-comedy that’s both strange and endearing in equal measure. Directed by Michael Fischa, the film mixes werewolf lore with slapstick humor, creating a light-hearted take on the genre that appeals more to fans of campy, family-friendly horror than traditional monster movie enthusiasts.

The plot follows a suburban housewife, Janet (Susan Blakely), who, after a visit to a mysterious pet store, ends up getting bitten by a werewolf and slowly begins transforming into one herself. As her transformation progresses, Janet must balance her new, supernatural urges with her duties as a wife and mother, all while trying to prevent her family from discovering her furry secret. Meanwhile, her daughter, played by a young Angela Gomez, becomes suspicious and teams up with a local veterinarian to help solve the mystery.

The film embraces its absurdity wholeheartedly, with a premise that’s so outlandish, it works as a source of both laughs and mild horror. The werewolf transformation scenes are campy at best, relying heavily on practical effects, and the special effects are as cheesy as they are charming. While the film’s horror elements are tame (it’s certainly not a scary movie), the comedy works by leaning into the ridiculousness of its premise.

Susan Blakely is the standout here, delivering a performance that walks the fine line between comedic and slightly creepy as a mom trying to juggle her new werewolf identity. The film’s humor is harmless, filled with goofy situations, slapstick moments, and misunderstandings that make it a silly, nostalgic watch. While it’s not an intense werewolf movie or a gory horror film, My Mom’s A Werewolf offers a fun, family-friendly take on the genre that doesn’t take itself seriously.

If you’re in the mood for a lighthearted and goofy monster movie, My Mom’s A Werewolf delivers an entertaining and absurd ride.
