Review: Caught Stealing (2025)

Caught Stealing (2025), directed by Darren Aronofsky, is a gritty and relentless adaptation of Charlie Huston’s novel. Set in the underbelly of 1990s New York City, the film follows Hank Thompson (Austin Butler), a washed-up former baseball player who stumbles into a deadly web of crime, mistaken identities, and escalating violence after agreeing to do a simple favor.
Austin Butler delivers a gripping performance as Hank, capturing the character’s descent from a quiet life as a bartender to an out-of-control spiral of danger and moral compromise. His portrayal of a man reluctantly forced into chaos gives the film emotional weight, grounding its noir stylings in human vulnerability.
Darren Aronofsky’s direction amplifies the tension and paranoia with his trademark intensity, blending stylized visuals and dark humor. The New York of Caught Stealing is grungy, claustrophobic, and unforgiving—a perfect backdrop for the brutal cat-and-mouse game Hank becomes trapped in.
