My Spy (2020) and its 2024 sequel My Spy: The Eternal City deliver a fun mix of action, heart, and humor that makes them solid family-friendly entertainment with a spy twist.
In the first My Spy, Dave Bautista stars as hardened CIA operative JJ, who finds himself hilariously outmatched not by enemy agents, but by a clever 9-year-old girl named Sophie (Chloe Coleman). Assigned to surveil her family, JJ is quickly discovered by Sophie, who blackmails him into teaching her how to be a spy. The film blends action and comedy with a surprising amount of heart, thanks to the charming chemistry between Bautista and Coleman. While the plot may be predictable, it’s elevated by the actors’ performances and some genuinely funny moments.

The sequel, My Spy: The Eternal City, takes the unlikely duo overseas to Italy, where JJ is pulled into a high-stakes international mission while chaperoning Sophie’s school choir trip. This second outing ups the action and keeps the emotional core intact, exploring how their bond has grown and how Sophie’s coming-of-age is clashing with JJ’s protective instincts. It’s still packed with laughs, but there’s more maturity and world-building in this follow-up, giving fans a satisfying continuation.

Both films strike a balance between heartfelt moments and spy-movie fun, making them enjoyable for both kids and adults. Bautista proves again that he has the comedic timing and warmth to carry roles beyond just tough-guy characters, while Chloe Coleman shines with intelligence and charisma.
Together, My Spy and its sequel are lighthearted, entertaining adventures about friendship, growth, and finding family in the most unexpected places.
